Foundation Focus: Financial Clarity for Creatives

I have spent an entire career, 30 years, in fact, creating special moments for other people. Weddings, showers, reunions, graduations, funerals, even a “When Pigs Fly” party. I helped strangers create memories for themselves and faded into the background of events while pulling the strings and managing people, timelines and crisis. My work ethic has always been hard to beat, and dedication has never been a problem for me. But, the entire time, I felt a burning secret that I really never told anyone, so that I didn’t crack the image that I carefully created in my professional life. In fact, in these last few years, I realized that the reason I was so addicted to the grind and the long hours is because it was a place I had control. I was good at it. But what I wasn’t good at was me.
My world and life were always teetering because I never took the time to build my personal foundation. To me, the foundation of a person is physical and mental health, finances, environment, relationships, personal enjoyment, spiritual fulfillment, self-worth/self-care. This is part science, part psychology and part School of Jen. If these foundational pillars are tended and strong, you can go forward and do anything with a sense of stability. Stable foundation = more choices than someone operating without. There is a sense of freedom that comes with this. With a strong personal base, you are better able to handle when life throws its curveballs or worse at you. We can react with logic instead of fear. We have a solid knowledge and savings, should something such as loss of income or relationship trials challenge our trajectory. And they will. Life is full of endless lessons and changes, both small and major. It is time that the creatives that make up the members of the Event Industry build their foundations before they build the events.
This brings me to Tina Richardson, aka DJ Queen T. I have had the pleasure of working with her a few times have developed a friendship with her that I cherish.
